Colorful and vibrant oil paintings
I love to paint in oils, working from my studio at the foot of the Malvern Hills and en plein air.
Working in oils is both challenging and flexible. I am interested in colour and light, and in exploring how to capture the essence of places and things at a moment in time. I am inspired by nature, and the nature of things.
Subjects that appeal are varied: fast moving clouds over countryside; the stillness of an open book left on a chair; figures in a park; flamboyant blooms.
I aspire to a loose, direct approach - although that isn't always what happens. I like to paint directly from observation, but sketching and photographs are often a valuable part of the process.
Every painting is a learning experience. I have worked in journalism and communication, and have no formal art training. However, I have enjoyed painting groups and classes over the years, notably the inspirational teaching of Martin Kinnear.
Painters whose work I can never see enough of include F.C.B Cadell, J. D. Ferguson, Winifred Nicholson, Richard Diebenkorn, John Singer-Sargent...
